In the present paper, the authors analyze a translation process implemented within the framework of Relevance Theory using Adaptation Theory as a tool to ensure relevance in the translation of popular science texts. The paper is part of ongoing research dedicated to the development of methodology for translation of popular science texts on architecture, ICT, and economics, focused here on translating from English into Latvian. Recognizing that relevance in translation is a qualitative category, the authors suggest measuring it along two dimensions: the plane of content and the plane of expression. Having defined four categories of relevance, the authors have developed a grid that may be recommended as a guide in a translator’s decision-making process for selecting a particular adaptive strategy and translation method.Šiame straipsnyje vertimo procesas analizuojamas taikant relevantiškumo teorijos sistemą. Pasinaudodamos adaptacijos teorija kaip priemone užtikrinti relevantiškumą verčiant mokslo populiarinimo tekstus, straipsnio autorės kuria šių tekstų vertimo iš anglų kalbos į latvių kalbą metodiką. Straipsnyje pristatoma medžiaga yra šiuo metu vykdomo platesnio architektūros, IKT ir ekonomikos sričių mokslo populiarinimo tekstų vertimo tyrimo dalis. Laikomasi nuomonės, kad relevantiškumas vertime yra pamatuojama kategorija – autorės siūlo jį vertinti dviem pjūviais: pagal relevantiškumo laipsnį ir pagal relevantiškumo lygį, t. y. turinio ir raiškos lygmeniu. Tuo remdamosi autorės sukūrė tinklelį, kurį rekomenduoja taikyti vertėjui priimant sprendimus, kai reikia pasirinkti tam tikrą procedūrą ar vertimo būdą

Hip muscle weakness is an often-occurring condition after displaced fractures of the proximal femur in older patients. The aim of this study was to compare hip muscle strength and pain in elderly female patients after proximal femoral fracture. Nine female patients (mean±SD of 71.4±3.9 yrs) participated in this study. Knee extensor, hip abductor and adductor muscle strength was evaluated with handheld dynamometer Lafayette (USA) during the first week of postoperative stay in hospital, and 6 months postfracture with fractured and nonfractured leg. Pain was assessed using a visual analogue scale. A week after the operation knee extensor, hip abductor and adductor muscle isometric muscle strength for the fractured leg was decreased (p<0.05) by 50.7%, 55.6% and 38.8%, respectively, compared to the nonfractured limb. At 6-month follow-up, hip muscle strength increased significantly (p < 0.05) in both the fractured and nonfractured leg. Hip muscle strength for the fractured leg was significantly lower (p<0.05) compared with the nonfractured leg 6 months after surgery. Pain score was significantly (p<0.05) higher during the first postoperative week as compared to 6 months follow-up.It was concluded that voluntary maximal isometric force-generating capacity of knee and hip muscles for the fractured leg was markedly increased 1 week and 6 months postoperatively. Isometric force-generating capacity for the fractured leg was significantly improved by 6 months follow-up

The article deals with the problem of punning word formation in the German language. In connection with the topicality of philological studies on reflection of national specifics in the language, as well as the comparative study of different national languages and their features, the interest in unique linguistic phenomena has been growing. For example, the frequency of composition as a word-forming method in European languages or the structural and semantic features of punning word formation are of interest. The relevance of the article is determined by the active use of puns in modern German, based on the model of complex words. The article aims to study punning complex words as one of the types of language game, as well as to consider word-formation patterns, on the basis of which puns are formed, and their translations into Russian. The main methods of research are the method of continuous sampling, the descriptive and comparative method, as well as the analysis of directly constituent components. For the completeness of the presentation of the features of a given linguistic phenomenon, the article covers the notions of composing, pun, word-formation model. The study identifies the most frequent and widespread models of punning formations and analyzes their translation equivalents in the Russian language. The punning compound words from the point of view of the structure correspond to the word-formation models characteristic of the German language, their specific feature is the semantic transformation that is based on the meaning change of one of the components of pun and influences the translation of the word.

Modification of polyoxymethylene for increased thermal resistance

Ternary nanocomposites, composed of polyoxymethylene (POM), ethylene octene copolymer and zinc oxide (ZnO), are prepared by melt compounding. The effects of two types of ethylene-octene copolymers, differing with α-octene content (38% for EOC38 and 17% for EOC17), as well as nanostructured ZnO on thermal behavior of POM are investigated. The content of EOC in the POM based composites is varied between 10 and 50 wt%, while the content of ZnO is 2 wt%. Thermal behavior of POM based systems are studied by using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results of thermogravimetric analysis show that, by rising either the elastomer or ZnO content, thermal stability of the investigated POM composites can be increased. The modifying effect of EOC17 in respect of thermal resistance is somewhat greater than that of EOC38. Simultaneous addition of EOC and ZnO to POM is synergistic with respect to thermal stability of the composite material. POLYM. ENG. Ongoing climate change can shift organism phenology in ways that vary depending on species, habitats and climate factors studied. To probe for large-scale patterns in associated phenological change, we use 70,709 observations from six decades of systematic monitoring across the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Among 110 phenological events related to plants, birds, insects, amphibians and fungi, we find a mosaic of change, defying simple predictions of earlier springs, later autumns and stronger changes at higher latitudes and elevations. Site mean temperature emerged as a strong predictor of local phenology, but the magnitude and direction of change varied with trophic level and the relative timing of an event. Beyond temperature-associated variation, we uncover high variation among both sites and years, with some sites being characterized by disproportionately long seasons and others by short ones. Our findings emphasize concerns regarding ecosystem integrity and highlight the difficulty of predicting climate change outcomes. The authors use systematic monitoring across the former USSR to investigate phenological changes across taxa. The long-term mean temperature of a site emerged as a strong predictor of phenological change, with further imprints of trophic level, event timing, site, year and biotic interactions.Peer reviewe

    Get PDF
We present an extensive, large-scale, long-term and multitaxon database on phenological and climatic variation, involving 506,186 observation dates acquired in 471 localities in Russian Federation, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan. The data cover the period 1890-2018, with 96% of the data being from 1960 onwards. The database is rich in plants, birds and climatic events, but also includes insects, amphibians, reptiles and fungi. The database includes multiple events per species, such as the onset days of leaf unfolding and leaf fall for plants, and the days for first spring and last autumn occurrences for birds. The data were acquired using standardized methods by permanent staff of national parks and nature reserves (87% of the data) and members of a phenological observation network (13% of the data). The database is valuable for exploring how species respond in their phenology to climate change. Large-scale analyses of spatial variation in phenological response can help to better predict the consequences of species and community responses to climate change.Peer reviewe
